What size is right for you?
When it comes to backpacks, it’s not your height that matters, but your back length. Two people who are both 1.80 m tall can have completely different back lengths, and it’s precisely this that determines whether the hip belt sits on the iliac crest and the weight actually lands on your hips instead of your shoulders.
Here’s how to measure: Tilt your head forward; you’ll feel a distinctly protruding vertebra at the base of your neck. From there, have a second person measure along the spine up to the level of the upper iliac crest—that is, where you place your hands on your hips. This measurement is your back length. For the hip belt, measure the circumference at the level of the iliac crest, not at the waist.
- √ S/M: Back length 43 to 53 cm, hip circumference 66 to 114 cm
- √ L/XL: Back length 48 to 58 cm, hip circumference 71 to 127 cm
- √ Back length continuously adjustable on the carrying system
If you fall within the overlap range, choose the smaller size. The back length can be adjusted on the backpack, and a more compact fit ensures a more stable feel. If you’re unsure, give us a call or stop by—we’ll help you adjust it.
Who is the Kestrel 48 suitable for?
For trekking tours, weekend trips, and challenging day hikes.
Does it come with a rain cover?
Yes, an integrated rain cover is included.
Can I use a hydration system?
Yes, the backpack has an internal hydration bladder compartment.
I’m 1.75 m tall—what size do I need?
You can’t determine this based on height alone. The key factor is the back length from the top of the neck to the upper iliac crest. Measure it once—it takes two minutes—and you’ll be sure to get it right.
What should I do if I’m between two sizes?
Go with the smaller one. The backpack’s back length can be adjusted upward, and a backpack that fits a bit more snugly sits more comfortably against your back than one that’s too long.
Where should the weight be distributed?
About 80 percent should be on your hips, and the rest on your shoulders. If your shoulders start to burn after an hour, the hip belt is too high or the back length isn’t right.
