Designed for the female anatomy
The Fairview is the women’s version from the Osprey travel line. The shoulder straps and hip fins are cut shorter and more curved, and the back panel is designed for shorter back lengths and narrower shoulders. You’ll notice this especially when the backpack is full and you’re carrying it for more than a few minutes.

Is the Fairview 40 a good fit for you?
When it comes to backpacks, it’s not your height that matters, but your back length. Two people who are both 1.80 m tall can have completely different back lengths, and it’s precisely this that determines whether the hip belt sits on the iliac crest and the weight actually lands on your hips instead of your shoulders.
Here’s how to measure: Tilt your head forward; you’ll feel a distinctly protruding vertebra at the base of your neck. From there, have a second person measure along the spine up to the level of the upper iliac crest—that is, where you place your hands on your hips. This measurement is your back length. For the hip belt, measure the circumference at the level of the iliac crest, not at the waist.

Generally speaking, yes—it’s just a matter of fit. If you have a long back and broad shoulders, you’ll be happier with a model from the men’s line. For men with shorter backs, the Fairview also fits well.
I’m 1.75 m tall—what size do I need?
You can’t determine this based on height alone. The key factor is the back length from the top of the neck to the upper iliac crest. Measure it once—it takes two minutes—and you’ll be sure to get it right.
The Fairview comes in only one size—does it really fit everyone?
No, and that’s more honest than any “one-size-fits-all” promise. It covers back lengths from 38 to 47 cm—a wide, but not unlimited, range. If your back length is significantly above or below this range, you’re better off with a model that has an adjustable carrying system.
Where should the weight be distributed?
About 80 percent should be on your hips, and the rest on your shoulders. If your shoulders start to burn after an hour, the hip belt is too high or the back length isn’t right.
