Water-repellent spray and waterproofing: protection for jackets, shoes, and gear
A ski jacket that soaks up water becomes heavy, cold, and stops breathing. The problem is almost never the membrane, but the worn-out water-repellent treatment on the outer surface. You can renew it yourself in half an hour. We carry the right waterproofing spray and wash-in treatment from Toko, Hey Sport and Holmenkol, for technical clothing, shoes, leather, tents, and even horse blankets.
Which waterproofing treatment is right for your material?
- Hardshell and membrane (GORE-TEX, ski jacket, ski pants): waterproofing spray to apply from the outside, for example Toko Eco Care Textile Water Proof or Hey Sport Tex FF Impra. The membrane stays clear and breathable.
- Softshell, fleece, and textiles without a membrane: wash-in treatment for the washing machine, such as Toko Eco Care Wash-In Water Proof. Practical if you want to waterproof several items at the same time.
- Leather and suede: Hey Sport Leather FF Impra Spray or Toko Leather Balm. Protects against moisture and keeps the material supple.

Spray or Wash-In: what is the difference?
The waterproofing spray only coats the outer surface. That is exactly what you want for anything with a membrane, because water vapor still needs to escape from the inside. Wash-In, on the other hand, treats the textile completely through, including the inside. With membrane textiles, this reduces breathability; with fleece, softshell, and cotton, it is the faster solution. A proven classic for this is Hey Sport Impra Wash Fluorine-Free.
In short: membrane equals spray, no membrane equals Wash-In. If in doubt, check the care label or ask us.
PFC-free waterproofing
The topic is valid: classic waterproofing sprays long worked with fluorocarbons, which hardly break down in the environment. Our waterproofing products are fluorine-free and still effective. The Hey Sport Leather FF Impra Spray works without fluorine or silicone and sprays only with air pressure instead of propellant gas, so also upside down. The Toko Eco Care line is water-based, biodegradable, and certified according to ECO PASSPORT by OEKO-TEX.
The only difference in practice: fluorine-free treatments need heat activation a bit more consistently. If you do the dryer or ironing step, you will not notice any disadvantage.
How to waterproof correctly
- Wash first. Dirt and detergent residues block the waterproofing treatment. Use a special detergent for technical clothing, not regular heavy-duty detergent and no fabric softener. Washing and waterproofing in one set are available as the Toko Care Duo Pack or as the Hey Sport Set Tex Wash and Impra Wash-In.
- Treat while damp. Most sprays work best on slightly damp textile, directly after washing.
- Spray evenly, from about 20 cm away, especially on shoulders, sleeves, and hood. Remove excess with a cloth.
- Activate with heat. 20 to 30 minutes in the tumble dryer at low temperature or with the iron over a cloth. Without this step, the waterproofing treatment lasts only a fraction as long.
When should you reapply waterproofing?
The test is simple: spray water onto the fabric. If it beads off, everything is fine. If it creates dark spots, it is time. As a guideline, with normal use, a refresh after every third to fifth wash is enough. If you spend a lot of time in wet snow or on tours, do it more often.

Frequently asked questions about waterproofing
Can I waterproof my GORE-TEX jacket myself?
Yes, and you should even do it regularly. Use a spray-on treatment and activate it with heat. The membrane will not be damaged.
Does waterproofing make the jacket airtight?
No. The coating sits only on the outer material and still allows water vapor through. On the contrary, a fresh waterproofing treatment improves breathability because the outer material no longer soaks up water.
Does waterproofing spray also work on down jackets?
On the outer material, yes. It is important that you wash the jacket first with a down detergent and fluff it back up in the tumble dryer with tennis balls.
Why does water bead off less well after washing?
Usually detergent residues are left on the fabric. An additional rinse cycle and then the heat step usually restore the effect.
How long does the waterproofing treatment need to dry?
After heat activation, the gear is ready for use immediately. If you let it air dry, expect about 24 hours until full effect.
