A ski doesn’t get fast just because you iron expensive wax onto it, but because the edge and base are right. For that, you need tools for ski maintenance, that do the job right: files that maintain the correct angle, brushes, that really remove the wax from the base, and blades that don’t cut into the base.
Toko Tools for edges, base, and wax
The core of the set consists of tools from Toko, supplemented by individual parts from SWIX, Holmenkol, and Wintersteiger. Most of these are also available in our workshop—we won’t sell you anything we don’t use ourselves.
What You Really Need for Home Ski Maintenance
√ An edge grinder with a fixed angle, so you don’t have to reposition it with every stroke
√ Use a diamond file for touch-ups between ski days; save the coarse file for major service only
√ Plexiglass scraper, at least 4 mm thick, so it doesn’t bend
√ Three brushes: brass to open up the structure, nylon to brush out the excess wax, and horsehair or a polishing brush for the finish
√ Waxing iron with stable temperature—a household iron will burn the base
Should you grind the edges or just resharpen them?
A quick touch-up with the diamond file is enough after most days of skiing and takes five minutes. You only need to do a proper sharpening if the edge has burrs or if you’re changing the angle. If you don’t want to go through that trouble, bring your skis to our service center—the tools here are for anyone who wants to do it themselves.
Frequently Asked Questions About Ski Service Tools
What edge angle should I use?
For most on-piste skis, 1 degree on the sides and 0.5 to 1 degree on the base is standard. Racers go for 2 to 3 degrees on the sides, which provides better grip but is less forgiving.
How often do I need to wax my skis?
As a rule of thumb, every three to five days of skiing. With artificial snow and spring firn, do it more often, because both wear down the wax faster.
Is a household iron sufficient for waxing?
No. It has steam holes and the temperature control isn’t precise enough. If it gets too hot, you’ll burn the base, and it can’t be repaired.
Which brush first?
Start with brass to open up the structure, then use nylon to brush out the excess wax, and finish with horsehair or a polishing brush for the shine.
