Leki Ski Poles: Origins and the Patented Trigger System

Leki was founded in 1948, when Karl Lenhart established a small company for plastic parts in Kirchheim unter Teck. The brand name is a combination of the family name Lenhart and the company’s headquarters in Kirchheim. His son, Klaus Lenhart, took over management in 1984 and had already launched the company’s first ski poles in 1970 under the name “ Leki ”—made of aluminum and later composite materials, which he continuously refined in the years that followed and had manufactured at the company’s own factory.

The biggest leap in development came in 1998 with the patented Trigger System: a secure connection between the glove and the grip that releases specifically in the event of a fall, thereby reducing the risk of wrist injury, while noticeably improving power transfer during normal skiing. TheLeki Airfoil 3Dcombines this technology in a lightweight racing pole with a Trigger-S grip, demonstrating how consistently Leki has continued to apply this principle in nearly every model to this day.

Choose the right Leki ski pole for your needs

Which Leki ski pole is right for you depends on your intended use. For a relaxed day on the slopes, we recommend aluminum poles with a classic grip, which are sturdy, forgiving of falls, and remain attractively priced. Competitive skiers or racers will benefit from carbon models like the HRC Team or Carbon 12 3D, which offer maximum stiffness and power transfer with minimal weight—a crucial factor whenever you plant your poles in a turn or push off from the starting gate.

A length-adjustable pole is ideal for ski touring and trekking: TheLeki Aergon 3 Touring Ski Polecan be continuously adjusted for ascents and descents, and with its ergonomic grip and cork option, it noticeably reduces fatigue in the hand and forearm—even during ascents lasting several hours. Those who also ski in open terrain will appreciate the larger touring basket, which prevents the pole from sinking into deep snow. We’d be happy to advise you in person at our store on the right pole length and model for your needs.

Zubehör & Pflege

Gloves, protective gear, and accessories for your Leki Trigger System

If you want to benefit from the Trigger System, you’ll need a compatible Leki Trigger glove: Models such as theLeki Griffin Pro 3Dconnect securely to the grip and release in a controlled manner in the event of a fall, while providing noticeably more stability and grip during normal skiing than a loose wrist strap. For racing, shin and forearm protection, such as the Fore Arm Protector Carbon 2.0, complement the gear to guard against contact with the goalposts and reliably protect sensitive areas throughout the entire racing and training season.

Between outings, it’s worth using a boot bag with a separate compartment for gloves and accessories to keep Trigger systems dry, clean, and within easy reach. Replacement parts such as pole tips, baskets, grip sleeves, and replacement straps are available individually, so that a Leki ski pole can be maintained and repaired over many seasons instead of having to be completely replaced. We’d be happy to advise you personally on other uses—either in our store or directly through our customer service.
