The name Dakine is a term in Hawaiian Creole English (derived from "the kind") and means something like the word "Dings" in German (i.e. everything and nothing), but also "the best" in an extended meaning. Due to the rapid development of sports such as surfing and windsurfing in the 1970s, the equipment required became increasingly specialized and the product range was expanded in 1989 to include items for the snowboard market. Finally, in 1999, a skateboard collection was added.
